Introduction
Apo', Chen Chiu-Hsing (b.1978, Hualien, Taiwan) and his partner Wang Ting-Ting (b.1981, Taipei, Taiwan) have returned to Apo's hometown, Makotaay (Gangkou) Village, for more than ten years, and have been working at local administrative level as the "chief accountant," learning the traditional wisdom and techniques. This allowed him to accumulate a vigorous cultural base for further synthesis with his creative thinking, taking care of and preserving the precious cultural heritage of his village. Apo’s roots in the oceanic folklore and coastal livelihood combine with Tingting’s long-term creative pursuit and experimental spirit, bringing forth synergistic and diverse expressions in painting, installation, video, performance, craft, and so on. The main theme of their work is using the creative vocabulary of arts and chronological approaches in life history, historical events, legends, marine culture, and traditional life, through continuous learning and challenges, to transform profound issues. Since 2012 they have been working as artists, craftsmen, muralists, video documentarians, community organizers, and lecturers, producing many large-scale artworks in villages and schools in Eastern and Southern Taiwan.
