In 1996, the East Coast National Scenic Area Headquarters restored the ancient trail with minimum obstruction to the natural environment. Today, the ancient trail has become the best scenic route for outdoor and nature lovers.

Natural Ecosystem
Located at 11k on the Round Island Highway, the Across Mountain Trail used to be the only passage between Nanliao and Hot Spring Village. In the late 70s, the ancient road was left idle in overgrown greeneries since the Round Island Highway was established. In 1996, the East Coast National Scenic Area Headquarters restored the ancient trail with minimum obstruction to the natural environment. Today, the ancient trail has become the best scenic route for outdoor and nature lovers. The trail takes visitors to see common plants found in Green Island like Giant-leaved Markingnut, Ardisia Elliptica, Kawakami Excoecaria, Melastoma Affine, and Downy Rosemyrtle. Nephila pilipes, Diploderma swinhonis (Taiwan japalure) and Idea leuconoe (paper kite) can also be easily spotted. When the night falls, fireflies light up the woods. You may even come across wild reeves muntjacs or sika deer. The best way to explore the Across Mountain Ancient Trail is through slow-paced roaming and close observation of the surroundings.

Across Mountain Ancient Trail Tour
- Tour dates: Every Tuesday and Wednesday morning at 8:30 from August to October 2019. Reservation is required three days in advance. You can also book a tour on Monday, Thursday, and Friday with a minimum group of 15 participants.
- The tour is a complimentary service offered to all tourists by the East Coast National Scenic Area Headquarters.

- There are also beach cleanup events open for sign-up.

Care for Green Island through Beach and Mountain Cleanups
Green Island is the dream destination among divers. However, the influx of divers and tourists creates an unsightly scene of trash on the beach and marine debris which are detrimental to the environment. The cleanup events intend to educate tourists of the fact that most marine debris results from mismanaged garbage disposals. Tourists are encouraged to voluntarily sign up to join a beach cleanup event.

How to sign up
Deadline: Before October 2019
Location: Chaikou, Shilang, Dabaisha, Across Mountain Ancient Trail, Across Mountain Trail
Meeting point: Green Island Visitor Center
Procedure:
1. Call 089-672026 to make a reservation three days in advance.
2. Proceed to the meeting point to collect equipment for the cleanup.
3. Every visitor who participated in a cleanup will receive a complimentary gift.
Water for All
In collaboration with Taitung County Government, drinking fountains at government offices in Green Island are now open to the public. Visitors can bring their reusable containers to get a refill at these offices without having to purchase bottled water. It as an active measure enacted to reduce waste in Green Island.
